Closeness and love go hand in hand. Of course they do – how can you not be close to those whom you love?

And yet, God, being a loving God, loves those to whom you are not close. God even loves your enemies! How then, can it be that you have enemies? How can it be that you do not love your enemies?

Could it be, perhaps, that you are indifferent, and hate your enemies because you are not close to them? Ah yes, how easy it is to find fault with those who are not close to you – especially those in lands far away.

Then maybe the problem you face is distance. Distance, being how close it is you are to your family and neighbors. Distance, in your closeness to those of other races and creeds. Distance, in your closeness to God.

“Whoa,” you say. “I am very close to God!”

“Then,” I reply in all humbleness, “If you are so close to God, how can you be so distant to your enemy? How can you even have an enemy if you are so close to God?”

Indifference and hate disguise themselves in many forms. But love has no disguises. Love just is. Love is as close to you as God is as close to you. Can you not feel both God and love in your soul and heart? I hope that you can, otherwise you are not even close to yourself let alone being close to God.
